Event Description

Woodland Park features the most diverse tree canopy of any Lexington city park. Botanist Rob Paratley will lead a tour that highlights some of the park’s unusual tree selections, such as Japanese cryptomeria, Alaska cedar, limber pine, Japanese larch, Chinese pistache, paperbark maple, Chinese cork oak,  Amur corktree, and Chinese redbud. Some seldom-used native trees – yellow buckeye, swamp chestnut oak, bigleaf magnolia, Carolina silverbell,- will also be part of the tour.Recent reports urge cities to plant a diverse tree canopy to provide climate resilience in the face of future warming and increasingly unpredictable precipitation. Planners of Woodland Park have been way ahead of the curve and have created not only a varied and interesting tree canopy, but one perhaps poised to successfully face the climate challenges that we are already experiencing.

Meet behind Woodland Park Skate Park, the side facing the pool. Parking best on Clay Avenue or some on High Street.

This event is kid-friendly.
